Description

Tales from Shakespeare by Charles and Mary Lamb is a retelling of some of William Shakespeare's most famous plays, adapted for younger readers. First published in 1807, the book simplifies the complex language and themes of Shakespeare's works, making them accessible to children and those unfamiliar with the original plays. The tales include well-known stories such as Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, Hamlet, and A Midsummer Night's Dream, presented in a straightforward and engaging manner. The Lambs' versions retain the essence of Shakespeare's plots while offering a more approachable introduction to his timeless stories.

About the Author

Charles Lamb (1775–1834) and Mary Lamb (1764–1847) were English writers best known for their collaborative work on Tales from Shakespeare, a collection of simplified retellings of Shakespeare's plays for children. Charles was a well-known essayist, famous for his Essays of Elia, while Mary, his sister, was also a writer and poet. The Lambs were particularly close, and their partnership in writing and storytelling was a defining feature of their lives. Charles' sharp wit and Mary's sensitivity and creativity combined to create a lasting literary legacy, with Tales from Shakespeare being one of their most enduring contributions.
